“Old Town Inn”, 11″x14″ oil on linen – ©2012 Denise Rose Fine Art
I love seeing process paintings on other artists’ blogs and sites, so I decided I will start sharing more of mine. I painted this inn while visiting Apalachicola, Florida during the paint out they have there each May. I loved the color of this inn and really tried to think of a different composition than what I normally choose when painting buildings. I completed about 95% of the painting while on site, only adding a few final touches back in the studio.

Stained my canvas a mix of warm rose and indian yellow, both transparent colors.

Beginning to sketch with thin paint.

Sketch with the scene in the background.

Blocking in my darks with thin paint.

Painting mid values and lights, working all over the canvas and comparing values as I paint.

Finished up on site. The tiny gnats were starting to close in on me, and my painting buddies and I were ready for dinner and a cold beverage!

Interesting and beautiful (as always…!) I would love to fill a wall with your paintings!
Thanks Jeanne! I love painting and hope that it brings others some joy too!
More of these process paintings, please. Thanks, Denise, for sharing your talent and love of painting with us “beginners”.
Thanks Gay! I will do that! I love taking the photos too because it helps me see “where I’ve been!”
Really nice drawing in this Denise, you got the house structure beautifully. It is always fun to see the progression and I particularly liked seeing the underpainting you did for this. Nice job!
Thanks Kim! I appreciate the kind words!
